Yaama Ngura

Yaama Ngurawas a one-day participatory photo and story exhibition held at Memorial Park, The Entrance, as part of Harmony Day. Featuring ten immigrants from ten countries, the project brought together portraiture, storytelling, and a ceremonial welcome on Darkinjung Country in collaboration with Uncle Gavi Duncan and local writer Mel Harwin. Named by Uncle Gavi Duncan in Gomeroi language, Yaama Ngura means “welcome.” The exhibition included a smoking ceremony to honour the ten participants, inviting the community to witness and share in a symbolic act of belonging. Inspired by my own experience as a migrant from South Africa, this project sought to create a meaningful moment of cultural recognition, connection and visibility within our diverse community.
